Jazz Documentary: Recapping the Jazz Festival of the year in Queens

Top Jazz Musicians set the stage ablaze in Queens

As a Jamaica Queens native and Jazz music lover, I must say…this past weekend was arguably the live music event of the year in the community thus far. The Downtown Jamaica Jazz Festival kicked off at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center after pausing last year due to COVID and it featured a roster full of the very best Jazz musicians in the world. After two explosive days of amazing live music, with talent ranging from Jazz singers like Samara Joy and Sachal Vasandani to vibraphonist Joel Ross, saxophonists Godwin Louis, Miguel Zenon and Melissa Aldana, the event was brought to a close by Ravi Coltrane.Along with the music, what stood out to us was the storylines. Jamaica Queens has long been referred to as the “Home of Jazz” (New York Times’ words, not mine), as musicians like Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Fats Waller, Lena Horne and sooo many others have called this place home. To watch Ravi Coltrane, who rarely plays anything from “A Love Supreme”, surprise the audience and honor his father at the event was timeless. We were on deck at this event, and were able to put together a quick short film of the happenings. Check out the photos and short Jazz Documentary below.
