Long Live the Supervillain
There’s an old saying amongst Hip Hop heads that couldn’t be more true: MF DOOM is “Your Favorite Rapper’s Favorite Rapper“. From Drake to Tyler the Creator, it’s not hard to locate a respected rapper that praised the Supervillain. My first listen came in 2012 (Mad late, I know). During this time, Joey Bada$$ was the newest, most refreshing thing on the Hip Hop scene, and he name dropped MF DOOM and his frequent collaborator Madlib often. From there, I immersed myself into his catalog, and the storylines that came with it. Listening to DOOM was an experience that represented more than his quirky, intricate rhyme schemes. MF DOOM was Hip Hop returning back to it’s essence, rejecting materialism and focusing on the art itself.
