Mo Town’s finest: Detroit basketball’s top ten hottest prospects

The Detroit area’s coldest hoopers

The city of Detroit has been a hotbed of hoops talent for decades and the current crop are definitely keeping the legacy alive. Here are 10 Motor City hoopers who have NEXT.

#10 Jalen Tobias

IMG_0029Jalen Tobias came into high school with a considerable amount of hype and so far, he hasn’t disappointed. His strengths lie mostly in his versatility and his ability to do pretty much everything on the court. With very little holes in his game, defenders couldn’t do much with him at Renaissance high this year.

#9 Julian Dozier

IMG_0030Dozier is tough, he’s skilled and he’s absolutely FEARLESS. The 5-9 sophomore played with a poise beyond his years this season for U of Detroit Jesuit and colleges are already taking notice. Central Michigan and Southern Miss have thrown offers his way, with more likely coming soon.

#8 Spider Johnson

IMG_0031Spider gained his nickname thanks to his lanky frame, which has proved to be advantageous to him on the court. The 6’8 forward is an interesting prospect off of potential alone and has been excellent in stretches this year for his Early College Of Excellence high school. With one more year, Spider should begin to display his talents consistently and catch some more solid mid major offers in his web.

#7 PJ Mitchell

IMG_0032Mitchell was the man for Detroit Edison as a junior, and the quick dimunitive guard ran the point to perfection all year. His squad suffered a heart breaking loss to Flint Bleecher in the playoffs, cutting his season short of the ultimate goal. With his verbal commit to Central Michigan out the way, he can focus on killing the competition and marching down state as a senior.

#6 Tray Jackson

IMG_0033Jackson has the size, skill and athleticism to get a bucket on anyone in the city. The Western International star already has a handful of offers from schools such a Eastern Michigan. With one more year to go, expect for him to break out even more.

#5 Zavon Goodwin

IMG_0035Zavon has good size and is extremely adept at slashing and finishing at the rim. After returning from injury in January, he put on for East English Prep and holds interest from Central Michigan, Michigan and Akron. Goodwin is fresh off a visit to Akron but for now is still wide open with his recruitment.

#4 Rocket Watts

IMG_0036Rocket Watts has the explosive game to match the name and the scariest part for the opposition is he still has two more years. Word is that Watts blew up on the AAU circuit this April, netting offers from Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Marquette, Michigan State and more.

#3 David Dejulius

IMG_0037Dejulius made a case for being one of the top point guards in the city this year. The 6’2 floor general has quickness, a sick right to left crossover and the ability to stop on a dime for pull ups. He’ll be staying in state, taking his talents to Ann Arbor to play for the Wolverines.

#2 Trevion Williams

IMG_0038When the 6-8, 250 pound Williams had his mind set on scoring, there was nobody in Detroit who could stop him this year. The four star big has a long list of colleges that would be happy to have his services. So far, Tom Izzo is rumored to have the lead.

#1 Romeo Weems

IMG_0039Weems put 18 and 11 on defenders heads this past year and recently gave some haunting news to New Haven’s opponents: He’s there to stay. After rumors of his departure from the school, the 6-5 wing announced that he would in fact be building on a year that included a 27-1 record and a state chip. He’s had a productive June which included him making the USA 16U team and blossoming as a nationally recognized prospect. As his recruitment continues to blow up, Tom Izzo is definitely gonna pull out all the tricks to keep him home.
