Artist Profile: Jeh Martinez

Art has always been the best language to explain the unexplainable and portray emotions that cannot be described with words. This is something Jeh Martinez knows, and her consistent use of visual art to evoke emotion and conversation deserves to be noted. Her paintings touch on a vast range of subject matter, while remaining to look dope throughout. the Canadian representer sat down with us to discuss her humble beginnings, and bright future. Enjoy!

1. What was your upbringing like and how did it lead you towards art?

As a kid I had alot of energy and that would get me in trouble at my grandma would buy me all these sketchbooks to keep me occupied and this was the only moment i was actually able to keep calm..when I was drawing. I only started painting last year and so far I love it.

2. What would you say makes you unique as an artist?

Id say the fact that my main character is a representation of different states of my mind, thats why “she” is everywhere. It kinda represents me or a part of me I guess. Some people even say it looks like me or my mom. This not being intentional, I think its particular what the unconscious mind can bring. My art is also very raw and can appear shocking or gross for some people but we really just have to dig deeper to understand it.

3. How do you get inspired? What’s the process for you?

Alot of things inspire me ; people, movies, society and some of the things that are happening around the world.
I usually paint when im feeling overwhelmed with emotions or thoughts. Being someone who is very reserved, the process is often bringing my emotions to life without having to use actual words.

4. Is there a piece of art that’s most special to you? If so, why?

I think “Secret” is my favorite art piece so far. Just cause it could mean so many things. I relate to this painting so much.

5. What are your dreams and goals for the future?

I wanna be able to live off my art and inspire the next generation of artists.
