His look may not be what the industry typically wants, but he is what they need
Cordell Lewis has never been much of a talker. The aspiring model and fashion personality has always been quite reserved, opting to use his style as a medium of expression instead. “The older I got, the more I started to gain a love of fashion and began to express myself outwardly with who I was internally,” He says. “When the idea of modeling was brought to my attention by friends and strangers, I figured I’d try it out and see, and it turned out in my favor.” Lewis has since been displaying his modeling potential in shoots and fashion shows across the city, as his expanding resume is beginning to speak for itself.
“The older I got, the more I started to gain a love of fashion and began to express myself outwardly with who I was internally”
Lewis’ personality and current career path may be a direct result of his upbringing. “I’m from a conservative background and humble beginnings, filled with hard work, dedication and love,” He says. “I grew up around parents who had a love for clothes and an appreciation for the aesthetic.” He has taken these values and crafted them into his own look, which he likes to describe as “Trendy vintage”. “I have a fond for 80s/90s clothing because they’re funky, stylish and give me that nostalgic feel, He says. “Every time I enter a Thrift store, Good will or Vintage Shop, I find something really dope and eye catching, that I can’t help but buy.” Lewis’ look has culminated in him being recognized for his fashion and being booked for shows, such as the one he walked in for New York Fashion Week 2017.
“A lot of my work I scout on my own, my photo shoots are out of pocket and finding paid work in New York is difficult”
While things have been looking up for the young model, Cordell Lewis does face his share of hurdles. ” I don’t have the support of an agency behind me,” He says. “A lot of my work I scout on my own, my photo shoots are out of pocket and finding paid work in New York is difficult. There’s also this notion of you don’t have the face or the look that we want and hearing that can be tough.” Lewis has not let these factors discourage him though, instead he uses the freedom of being a freelance model as a positive as he is able to enjoy the freedom and control of his work without interference from an agency.
“I would like to advance my career into a boss”
Going forward, Lewis has big plans on what he hopes to achieve. His list includes booking more high end jobs, as well as working with top photographers and being in magazines and billboards. “I just really want to grow and develop as a model and even tap into to other areas in the creative field as well,” He says. “Lastly, I would like to advance my career into a boss, have a business and even own a brand.” The reserved model has made it clear that his fashion and modeling exploits are quite outspoken, and if you know like we know, you better listen up.
